RIP Peanut - a tribute to her life

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately i have some very sad news.
Peanut has died.

Peanut died peacefully in her sleep, in the part of her cage she loved
the most - The Big Orange pod (main pod on add-on). Her death was totally
unexpected, but I am comforted  by the fact she was a happy hamster and had  enjoyed being with me last night for the final time.

Peanut was the first hamster to appear on the blog  and has always played a huge part in
the blog posts -  there is hardly any posts on this blog which have not featured Peanut!

As a tribute to her life I shall display
some of the best blog posts featuring Peanut below,(links)
and will also show some of the photos taken during her life.

1. the first post on the blog featuring Peanut! (also no.1 in my blogs top 5 posts)  http://lifeofhamsterblog.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/hello-viewers-as-this-is-very-first.html

and now for a gallery of photos
to celebrate her life with captions alongside each photo:

This is the very first photo I took of Peanut,
when I started taming her. At first, frightened
and jumping out of my hands, she eventually
became a very tame little hamster.
she was 6 months old when i started to tame her.
This was taken when she about 8 months old.
It was also the very first photo of Peanut put
on this blog.
This was taken when she was 1 year old,
hence the writing.
This was taken when she about 1 year 1 month old.
She didn't always enjoy being cupped in my hand...
... preferring to walk on the palm of my hand
in her own time!
Peanut always enjoyed being on the grass outside in
my garden...
... and stuffing her cheeks full of clover!
Lots and lots of clover...
Peanut was an excellent escape artist,
escaping a total of 10 times!

This photo was taken when Peanut was 1year 4 months old.

Finally, here are some photos of Peanut exploring the add-on to her cage.

Peanut's favourite part of the cage was the add-on, (she made her nest in the add-on) although she did make visits to the main tank, mainly to get her food and to carry more bedding to the nest.

RIP Peanut - rest in peace my little friend.

Now comes a question i guess many of you will be thinking:
With no hamster what is going to happen to lifeofhamsterblog?
Answer: The blog will end for a while as there's no hamster but if I decide to get another hamster I might restart this blog.

bye for now and thank you all for visiting my blog,

Peanut's birthday!

Hi everyone,

Tonight is an important post because it's Peanuts birthday!

Peanut is 2 years old today, so  in hamster years,
she is middle-aged.

Here's Peanut celebrating her birthday:

Peanut, wake up! It's your birthday!

I have made you a hamster-safe cake Peanut!
I shall serve it to you.

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Peanut...
Happy birthday to you!

Happy 2nd birthday Peanut!
You can have a slice of hamster-safe cake now.

Here's Peanut tucking into her hamster-safe cake...

My Gerbils (yes, i know they're not hamsters)
were awake when Peanut was served a slice of her cake
so being party guests (in their gerbillarium) they got a slice
of hamster-cake too.

Your welcome, Peanut.
Hope you are able to celebrate a birthday next year!

Peanut will be back next post,

Hamstergirl

p.s: I will also post my
hamster-safe cake recipe too.
(safe for other rodents too)

Peanut's cage extension

hi everyone,

thanks for viewing my blog! I noticed that ' the 10 cage escapes of Peanut ' is now in my list of the 5 most popular posts on my blog. So yeah, anyway, those who have read ' the 10 cage escapes of Peanut ' will have noticed at the end that I said i would extend Peanut's cage with an add-on.
So here is Peanut exploring her new addition to her cage. (A Habitrail OVO suite kit)
Enjoy!

Here is an overall view of Peanuts cages

So, Peanut has found the hamster cookie i put in one of her cages new 'pods'

Peanut  wouldn't call this add-on a cage though...

Glad Peanut likes it anyway. I have noticed Peanut's favourite
pod is the main orange one...
(Normally this orange pod would have a wheel included with it,
but i removed the wheel to give Peanut more space and also because
Peanut doesn't use a wheel very much.)

I also captured some images of Peanut climbing up the tubes
to get back to her tank...

Doesn't Peanut look cute in this photo?

Peanut's always sniffing for treats...

So Peanut has now settled into her new extended cage.
She seems to enjoy the extension a lot, as She has now
moved her nest into the orange pod!

That's the latest news about Peanut,
keep in touch with me on Google+ for more hamster (and gerbil) stories!

Another post sometime soon,

The 10 cage escapes of Peanut

hi everyone,

apologies for not updating. I don't think I'll want to update regularly anymore.
Anyway, I have a better idea for a blog post so I am cancelling the 'Peanut chat' series.
Anyway, hope you enjoy this post!

Here are 10 tales of Peanut escaping from her cage:

1. When Peanut was a young hamster (about 6 1/2 months old)
She was super-bored, biting the cage bars, running around and then she noticed that the cage door hadn't been closed properly. She monkey-barred up her cage and pushed at the cage door. She managed to get it open and ran around the house excitedly. Thankfully, I managed to catch her.

2. Then the next evening, Peanut pushed at the door of the cage and got of her cage. I put her back in but she simply escaped again. There was an awful lot of chaos trying to catch her before she entered my brothers room....

3. So then I tied the cage door to the bars of her cage. But Peanut was an enthusiastic chewer and she chewed through that string in no time. She escaped again, having a very adventurous time out of her cage.

4. After the above tactic failed, I placed a weight on the cage door to stop her pushing the cage door open. But Peanut, being very clever, used her nose to push the weight off the door and escape yet again!

It eventually got to the point where Peanut was attempting to escape every night! So i put her in a glass tank. But she HATED it. (now i think about it, she hadn't settled in properly so of course she would hate it) So then I threw away her old cage ( it was third hand now ) and paid a visit to my local Pets at home shop...

where I got her a blue cage, where she lived until Sat Feb 22nd 2014. But even this 'more secure' cage wasn't entirely escape-proof!

5. One night, when i had just handled Peanut, Peanut was begging to be handled again. I couldn't so she monkey-barred upside down on the cage bars. she pushed at the door and managed to squeeze out! Thankfully, i spotted she'd escaped and managed to catch her before she went off to explore.

Peanut lived in the blue cage for quite a while, from September 2013 this was before i began this blog so that's why there are no photo's of her first ever cage. But then earlier this year i realised her cage just wasn't big enough for her. She was fully grown by then and actually larger than an average Syrian hamster. So i paid another visit to my local Pets at Home shop...

and bought her a new orange cage which was bigger and better than her old blue one. She has lived in this cage for quite some time until recently, when she escaped yet again...
(If your interested about how Peanut felt being in it at first, click on this link to go to the post where i introduced it to you viewers for the first time http://lifeofhamsterblog.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/peanuts-new-cage.html )

6.Peanut lived happily in her orange cage for some time but eventually, she got fed up with it and wanted out. So she monkey-barred on the cage and lent back her head to push open the door, only she fell off the bars. I never thought Peanut would be able to escape the orange cage but she did. The next moment I looked up, I saw an open cage door, and my clever little hamster on top of the cage, looking around. I put her back in her cage but she escaped again. I didn't know what to do...

7/8/Peanut escaped 3 more times by the same method, before i went and put her in a new glass tank.Below are some pictures of Peanut's old orange cage

Then I realised it was unsafe to house a hamster in a cage they can escape from... so i put her in a nice big tank full of sawdust with some toys. She escaped the first time i put her in and now...

10:Only a couple of days ago, Peanut escaped again! She escaped by climbing up the water bottle in her tank and jumping off the table where her new tank is.I found her running around the room where she's kept, at 10:00 pm at night. Now i have put a ventilated lid on her new tank, she can't escape.

So now her tank is escape-proof, I am extending it with an add-on cage to keep Peanut interested.
I will let you know how she gets on soon! (If she hasn't already escaped again...)

So thats all 8 times Peanut has escaped from her cages.

Hamstergirl

Peanut chat 1 - life after Snowball

hi everyone,

I am starting a new series of blog posts,
starting with today's one - Peanut chat 1!

Okay , so Peanut what are your thoughts about
life now Snowbi's passed away...

well, erm, actually its not just you and me...

On Tuesday this week, I bought two Gerbils!
Their names are Jerry and Jack. In the picture
below, here's Jerry...
( this'll be my  last mention of my gerbils
on this blog - it's called
life of hamster for a reason )

It's good to see Peanut acting naturally territorial  to new pets
but don't worry Peanut - u won't be meeting them - I remember
when u bit Snowbi on the nose through your cage bars!

anyway - next question -  do you miss Snowball,
Peanut?

I see.

Well its good your thinking positively, Peanut.

Very true Peanut. And as i don't plan to blog about
my Gerbils currently, I'll blog every week.

back next week, with another Peanut Chat,

Hamstergirl
